Understanding PMS Color Bridges

When designing packaging, logos and other branded print projects, using Pantone colors is a must for accuracy. But what happens when a job requires using many different Pantone colors? This is where a PMS color bridge comes in.

A PMS color bridge is a tool used by printers to convert or “bridge” all the various Pantone colors in a print layout to CMYK process colors. While Pantone colors provide precision, printing presses apply ink in CMYK.

The color bridge will specify the correct CMYK combination needed to match each specific Pantone color as closely as possible. All of the Pantone colors are effectively bridged into CMYK values for printing.

Bridges are created using swatch books and software tools to translate Pantones into their CMYK equivalents. There can be slight variations between bridges, so printers will calibrate to ensure the closest match.

For complex jobs with multiple Pantone colors, a bridge allows the entire project to be produced using efficient 4-color process printing. Instead of needing custom mixed inks for each Pantone, they can all be simulated using CMYK.

PMS color bridges provide huge advantages in cost and consistency when printing multi-branded projects. By relying on a calibrated bridge, we can match Pantone colors with confidence and efficiency.
