Understanding GSM for Paper Weights
When ordering printed materials, you may come across GSM as a measurement for specifying paper weight. But here in the U.S., we more commonly use pounds and points. So what exactly does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square meter. It's a metric paper measurement used internationally, especially in Europe and Asia. GSM indicates the weight in grams of one sheet of paper that is one square meter in size.
Some examples:
60 GSM paper means a single square meter sheet weighs 60 grams
90 GSM would weigh 90 grams per sheet
120 GSM would be 120 grams per square meter sheet
So higher GSM numbers correspond to thicker, heavier paper. Paper described as 80 GSM would be thinner than 150 GSM paper.
While GSM is very common globally, here in the U.S. we tend to use pounds (lbs) and points (pts) to specify paper weights. Pounds refer to the total weight of 500 sheets, while points designate thickness.
