Demystifying Paperboard Grades for Packaging
When specifying paperboard for packaging, you’ll encounter acronyms like SBS, CCNB, and TMP referring to the board grade. These terms define the properties and composition of the paperboard. Understanding the differences allows picking the right grade for your packaging needs.
SBS Board
SBS stands for solid bleached sulfate. SBS paperboard features bleached virgin fibers and additives to create stiffness and tear resistance. The solid sulfate pulping process produces high purity fibers that create a smooth, bright white surface ideal for high-end graphics. Common applications include folding cartons, food packaging, and retail boxes.
CCNB Board
CCNB refers to clay coated newsback, a recycled paperboard grade. It consists of recycled fibers with an added clay coating on one or both sides. The clay coating allows for high quality graphics, while recycled content reduces cost. CCNB is popular for food boxes, rigid mailers, and commercial packaging.
TMP Board
Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) board is made by subjecting wood chips to heat and pressure to separate fibers. TMP yields a porous but strong paperboard used for packaging that does not require bleaching. It provides an environmentally friendly option but lacks surface smoothness. TMP board works for industrial boxes and grocery bags.
By understanding paperboard grades, printers and designers can collaborate to select the right board for packaging durability, aesthetics, sustainability needs and budget. An expert commercial printer will know which grade fits specific packaging applications.
